Founded in 1999, the New Jersey Chemistry Council Education Foundation (NJCCEF), administered by the Chemistry Council of New Jersey, reaches out to New Jersey teachers and students throughout the year to promote science education and the many opportunities available in the business of chemistry.
Our annual Teachers, Industry and the Environment (TIE) workshops, now in its 11th year, offers a select group of kindergarten through eighth grade science teachers, about forty teachers in total, the opportunity to attend workshops facilitated by education and industry experts. The workshops are designed in conjunction with organizations like the Liberty Science Center and Chemical Heritage Foundation to provide hands-on experiments and lessons that teachers can incorporate into their science curriculum. The teachers learn new techniques that help to increase students’ interests in science and science related careers. All expenses are covered by the NJCCEFF for each teacher selected to attend the TIE workshops.
The NJCCEF also helps to promote an interest in science by coordinating the Volunteer Speakers Bureau. This program brought more than twenty experts together with schools touching over 1,000 young minds in the last year—communicating both the excitement of innovation and the vital importance the business of chemistry plays in virtually all aspects of society.
The NJCCEF plans to continue these great programs and expand them. These programs do not only promote science education, but also help to build goodwill between the business of chemistry and the New Jersey community. We are currently working on pursuing new initiatives that will honor those students who are pursuing science education in college or science related careers by scholarships, as well as offering small science grants to select schools in the state for science equipment. |
