Letters to The Editor

The business of chemistry is 4 times safer than other manufacturing industries combined

Dear Editor:

The business of chemistry never takes the safety and security of our workers for granted. We have invested time and resources to ensure that we continuously train employees on strict safety procedures. The industry adheres to self-imposed, rigorous safety standards that compliment and in some cases go beyond regulatory requirements.

The limited number of OHSA Process Safety Management (PSM) inspections at chemical facilities in New Jersey is not cause for warning, but highlight the exemplary safety performance at these facilities.

In New Jersey, many chemical facilities are also covered by the Toxic Catastrophe Prevention Act (TCPA) program and are inspected regularly. This inspection covers the same elements as OSHA PSM.

The call for more inspections will only demonstrate once again that our industry is doing its part to provide a safe working environment in an industry where hazards can be substantial.

We will not allow questionable organizations with ulterior motives to tarnish the safety record we have worked so hard to achieve. It is safer to work in the business of chemistry, than in retail!

Sincerely,

Hal Bozarth
Executive Director
Chemistry Council of New Jersey
